After obtaining a B.A. in Art Education from Syracuse University, Belle Smith focused on a career in motherhood. When her children went off to school, Belle tackled her very first design project—her own home. Friends and family ooh’ed and aah’ed over her work, and asked her remodel their homes, too! The high demand for her talents prompted Belle to return to school, this time at the Certified Metropolitan Institute of Interior Design. She turned her passion for design into a career, and she’s been unstoppable ever since….
A Certified Kitchen Designer, Belle is a Past President of the NY chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and was a board member of the National Kitchen & Bath Association’s NY Metro chapter (NKBA) for many years. Belle’s superpower is her ability to see through walls—she always knows exactly what to move in order to make the best use of a space. In fact, her appreciation for architecture inspired Belle’s involvement in the Long Island chapter of The American Institute of Architects (AIA).
Belle’s biggest design challenge was for a single mother with two small children, and an even smaller budget. She explains: “The mother was overwhelmed and depressed, but I focused on little changes that would yield maximum impact, creating a happier and more relaxed environment for the mom and her children.”
Having growing up in New York and Connecticut, Belle later lived on Long Island. Consequently, she loves to sail, and has island-hopped from Martha’s Vineyard all the way down to the British Virgin Islands. These days, Belle spends her free time playing Pickleball, crocheting, and enjoying Wilmington’s restaurant scene.
If you had your own design show on TV, what would you call it?
“Designing with Personality. I love incorporating aspects of the homeowners’ personalities, using their unique and eclectic collections as part of my design plans.” ~ Belle
